 Metformin as the Silver Lining for Diabetics Co-infected with Drug Sensitive Tuberculosis: Understanding the Clinical Aspects of Metformin’s Modification of Tuberculosis

To assess the anti-tuberculous activity of metformin among diabetes
mellitus patients with tuberculosis Kiruddu Hospital and Kisenyi HC IV , through comparing
clinical presentation, rate of symptom resolution, rate of smear conversion and frequency of
successful outcomes among drug susceptible tuberculosis patients receiving metformin for
diabetes mellitus when compared to those not on metformin.
Specific objectives:
1. To describe the clinical and radiological presentation of tuberculosis disease among
drug susceptible tuberculosis patients receiving metformin for diabetes mellitus
treatment and those not receiving metformin at Kiruddu Hospital and Kisenyi HC IV.
2. To evaluate clinical progression (resolution of symptoms and conversion to sputum
smear negativity) among drug susceptible tuberculosis patients receiving metformin
for diabetes mellitus treatment and those not receiving metformin at Kiruddu Hospital
and Kisenyi HC IV.
3. To compare successful tuberculosis treatment outcomes among drug susceptible
tuberculosis patients receiving metformin for diabetes mellitus treatment and those
not receiving metformin at Kiruddu Hospital and Kisenyi HC IV.
