Conservation Research to Monitor Grey Crowned Cranes in Uganda through Colour Band Ringing and Aerial Surveys

1. To establish a standardized crane ringing program by fitting ELSA colour rings on 20 Grey Crowned Crane chicks annually over a five-year period.
2. To track and document movement patterns and habitat use of colour-marked cranes across breeding, foraging, and dispersal landscapes.
3. To estimate survival rates and recruitment of juvenile cranes through periodic resighting of marked individuals.
4. To generate baseline biological and ecological data (including morphometrics) to address key knowledge gaps in the species’ life cycle.
5. To strengthen evidence-based conservation planning and adaptive management for Grey Crowned Crane populations in Uganda.
6. Provide data on Grey Crowned Crane populations and their distribution in Uganda
7. Advance our understanding of landscape use (particularly agriculture) and its influence on size and distribution of crane populations
8. Identify areas where the potential exists for crane conservation interventions
