Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems for Cachexia Care in Uganda

Increase awareness and knowledge of cancer cachexia among healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary teams involved in the care of patients with cachexia together with cancer cachexia patients; ii). To improve treatment outcomes of cancer patients with cachexia through the application of ESMO and ASCO guidelines in early diagnosis and provision of physiological and psychological care; iii). To improve patient, caregiver and healthcare professional communication through the application of the Patient-Clinician Communication ASCO Consensus Guideline in order to improve the quality of life of patients with cancer cachexia at Mbarara Regional Cancer Center, Mbarara regional referral hospital, Uganda Cancer Institute, Mulago, and Kawempe National referral hospitals.

TOPOWA Cohort Study

Through a prospective cohort of AGYW, determine if SeSTT modifies the pathways between proximal social and environmental stressors and mental health outcomes, through the RDoC constructs of negative valence, sustained threat, and arousal and regulatory systems. We will measure threat reactivity in fear conditioning, ratio of salivary cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and α-amylase, validate drug and alcohol use through urinalysis, sleep quality and environmental stressors (Garmin Vivoactive 3 wearable sensors, 5 daily diaries).,

A comparative study of Rural and Semi-rural Women’s Communication, Information, and Participation Needs in East Africa

To recommend what supports young women in their participation and to show how their voices can be amplified.,To examine how young women assess their own influence and possibilities to shape public discourse and to lobby for their own interests and needs,To identify the possible barriers (societal, cultural, religious, gender, personal) that may hinder young women’s participation in public discourse or decision-making.,To understand young women’s participation in public discourses and decision-making (including where they feel free/safe to speak and where not),To distinguish and explain the challenges young women face in terms of media literacy,To identify young women’s barriers/ challenges to the access to and usage of media, including media literacy,To identify young women’s information (including topic) needs/ interest as well as their preferred media and/ or media content,To understand the sources of information (besides classical media) and identify the type and frequency of media usage among young women,The primary objective of the study is to identify the communication, information and participation needs of young women in rural and semi-rural areas. Subsequently, the study results will be used to form the basis of DW Akademie’s project design for the innovation process / idea competition.,
