“Have you been saved?” Ecstatic exorcism as therapeutic healing

This project focuses on the Balokole church, aiming to produce an ethnographic analysis of the movement. The purpose of this research is to understand how the movement interacts with global Christianity while simultaneously inflecting local practices. In particular, It will look at the types of worship undertaken in the church, and how they are experienced within the congregation. The members of this movement commonly experience so-called ‘deliverances’ - where congregants are exorcised and cleansed of demons and evil spirits. Those who undergo deliverances tell of its healing effects. The ultimate aim of the project is to understand what deliverance is, and what happens to a person when they undergo it. It will also explore the personal transformation that happens when a person is ‘born again’, to better understand the therapeutic effects which conversion, deliverance and other rituals can have.

Quantitative study objectives
1. To assess knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the HPV vaccine among non-school going girls between 9 and 20 years.
2. To determine HPV uptake, willingness, and barriers to use HPV vaccines among nonschool going girls between 9 and 20 years.
3. To determine favourable vaccine delivery strategies for non-school going girls.
Qualitative study objectives
1. To explore the willingness and acceptability of taking up an HPV vaccine among nonschool going girls between 9 and 20 years.
2. To explore the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about HPV vaccine among nonschool going girls, parents/care givers, and healthcare providers.
3. To describe the facilitators and barriers to the uptake of HPV vaccine among non-school going girls, parents/care givers, and healthcare providers.
