Toxoplasma in chimpanzees (Pilot study)
REFNo: NS789ES
This study is a pilot study which aims to look at the behavioral effects of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii in two populations of wild chimpanzees at the Budongo conservation field station. the project aims to understand correlations between infection and behaviors, to see if there are differences between infected and non infected individuals. The objectives of the research are the following:
- To see whether infection by the parasite toxoplasma gondii changes behavior of infected chimpaanzees by comparing infected and uninfected individuals (by comparing infected and non infected individuals)
- Establish infection status in a population of wild chimpanzees by collecting urine and check which individuals are infected and those which aren't (collecting urine non invasively)
- To see whether infection influences risky behaviors in wild chimpanzees (aggression towards higher ranking chimpanzees, foraging close to the borders of the territory)
- Determine if infection influences reaction to unfamiliar stimul (false fruits, remoted controlled animals maybe)
- Establish trends in behavior and compare infected and non-infected individuals
- Collect behavioral data in the purpose of establishing new studies possibilities
