The Bureaucratisation of Legal Identities in colonial and post-colonial Uganda: A Socio-History of State Registration and Documentation of Individuals
REFNo: SS2227ES
My main objective is to generate original insights on the construction of bureaucratic knowledge and techniques of identification and their impact on state construction and practices of citizenship in Uganda. Our goal is to
1. Identify the (un)favourable contexts for the introduction of identification policies
2. Map the players involved in identification over time
3. Highlight the changes in the instruments of identification
4. Examine the circulation of these practices
5. Observe the impact of state identification and registration on the practices of citizenship and the relation to the state
At this stage of my research, I would like to focus on three non-exclusive lines of enquiry: the debate surrounding the first identity cards during late colonialism; the documentation of non-indigenous people, and in particular the citizenship crisis of Asians in the 1960s and 1970s; and finally, the intense periods of identification during electoral periods, and more specifically the processes of voter registration.

REFNo: HS3566ES
The study aims to demonstrate the extent to which dietary diversity for women and young children are increased and undernutrition reduced among the intervention versus comparison areas. The findings of the evaluation study will be used to inform the government of Uganda and partners the effectiveness of the programme and to support learning.
Specific objectives of the study
• To evaluate impact by gathering, analysing and synthesising evidence to determine whether the multi-sector nutrition project results in improved nutrition status and dietary diversity among pregnant and lactating women, adolescents and children.
• To evaluate the quality of programme implementation and to inform refinements to intervention design and delivery.
• To understand the mechanisms of change by which the project activities impact key outcomes and nutritional status of children.
• To examine impact of economic empowerment to nutrition outcomes and food security

3. Quantitative genetic and phenotypic (mainly growth rate) characterization of the Nile tilapia strains currently maintained at OWANMWAN Aquaculture Limited hatchery as broodstock.
4. Genomic evaluation of OWANMWAN Aquaculture Limited’s current broodstock to evaluate genetic diversity and inbreeding rate of the three strains at the hatchery.
5. Establishing a genomics-informed diverse Nile tilapia founder breeding stock for subsequent selective breeding.
6.Identifying genomic regions underlying key traits such as growth rate in the indigenous farmed Nile tilapia farmed strains at OWANMWAN Aquaculture Limited hatchery.

Multisystem aging patterns in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) living at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda
REFNo: NS727ES
To better understand the biological and ecological forces that shape primate aging, we will assess both longitudinal and cross-sectional, age-related patterns of social, physiological, and physical variation in adult chimpanzees of the notably long-lived groups at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda. This project will integrate behavioral, genetic, endocrinological, immunological, and microbial data collected from wild chimpanzees. We will combine tried-and-tried observational and laboratory analyses with innovative, noninvasive omics-based approaches to studying physiological function. The proposed research will elucidate the advantages and limitations of wild chimpanzees as models of human health and aging and build an extensive multisystem dataset for future comparative chimpanzee research.
The three primary goals of this research are outlined below:
1) Characterize cross-sectional and longitudinal aging trajectories across functional domains. How do functional domains vary in the timing and rate of age-related decline? Do some systems (e.g., physical function, immune function) exhibit later onset and/or slower rates of decline than do others?
2) Determine the extent of sex biases in aging trajectories in Ngogo chimpanzees. Given that female chimpanzees at Ngogo have greater life expectancies at birth than do males [25], do female chimpanzees also show slower or delayed rates of aging across most / all functional domains? Are aging effects more pronounced in some functional domains than others, and if so, which domains show greater sex biases?
3) Develop methods to noninvasively study chimpanzee aging. Given that the study of wild chimpanzees is strictly noninvasive, we will continue to develop, validate, and implement new methods for studying aging across a range of functional domains. Notably, we will continue to refine the use of video recordings to measure walking speeds, which are an invaluable measure of physical function in humans and nonhuman primates alike [32, 33]. We will develop new urinary biomarkers for use in wild chimpanzee studies including biomarkers of neurodegeneration (e.g., Alzheimer’s-associated neuronal thread protein) and physical function (e.g., urinary pentosidine). Finally, we will validate and implement the study of genetic material from chimpanzee saliva samples, including bacterial and epigenetic information, by collecting and subsequently analyzing chimpanzee saliva samples onsite at Ngogo using transportable sequencing equipment (MinION Mk1C sequencer, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Oxford, UK).

Using Implementation Science To Understand And Design Stakeholder Informed Innovative Interventions To Improve Youth HIV Prevention And Care Continuums In Rural And Urban Uganda
REFNo: HS3625ES
We will use platforms in aims 1 and 2 to strengthen capacity of implementation science and to translate findings into policy and guidelines through clearly defined and established channels. ,To assess the rollout of a culturally acceptable, feasible HIV prevention and care intervention among AYA at high risk, on uptake and persistence to CAB-LA or SEARCH-YOUTH treatment support intervention using implementation effectiveness hybrid designs. Aim 2 will be informed by Aim 1 with regards to specific implementation features. We will recruit AYA (15-24 years) both HIV negative and HIV positive. We will screen them for high risk of seroconversion if negative and for those testing HIV positive unsuppressed or at risk of being unsuppressed. We will assess scale up in real world settings of evidence-based interventions to increase uptake and persistence on CAB-LA (HIV negative) and increase viral suppression (HIV positive) among high risk AYA.,Using the updated CFIR, we will identify determinants (barriers and facilitators) of potential implementation success of two innovations: CAB-LA uptake and persistence and SEARCH-YOUTH (SY) implementation at the community, clinic, organization, provider, and patient levels in five CRPS in urban, semi-urban and rural Uganda. Using CFIR implementation science framework we will conduct in-depth key informant interviews and focus group discussions with five different stakeholder groups:,
