Teso Community Outreach for Awareness and Control of Hypertension and Diabetes (T-COACH)

1. To train and equip VHTs in the Teso sub region to conduct community-level health education and screening for elevated blood pressure and random blood sugar among adults
2. To implement a community-based screening and referral system using VHTs for timely identification of individuals with suspected or confirmed hypertension or diabetes and facilitate linkage to health facilities.
3. To support VHTs to monitor BP and blood glucose levels among patients diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes and facilitate medication refills in coordination with health facilities.
4. To evaluate the change in community screening rates, detection rates, knowledge and awareness level and control levels of hypertension and diabetes after 6 months of implementation through pre- and post-intervention surveys.
5. To document the feasibility, acceptability, and challenges of integrating hypertension and diabetes care into the VHT mandate to inform future scale-up and policy adoption.

Genomic profiling of plasmodium falciparum diversity and drug resistance markers and their effects on malaria recurrence among Ugandan children on dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine for post-discharge malaria chemoprevention after severe malaria anaemia

Objectives:
Main Objective
To investigate the role of P. falciparum genetic diversity and antimalarial drug-resistance markers in malaria recurrence among Ugandan children receiving DP for PDMC following SMA, and to evaluate how the use of DP for PDMC may influence parasite genetic diversity and the prevalence of antimalarial drug-resistance markers over time.
Specific Objectives
1. To estimate the association between P. falciparum antimalarial drug-resistance markers and malaria recurrence among Ugandan children receiving DP for PDMC following SMA.
2. To explore the association between demographic, clinical, and nutritional factors and malaria recurrence among Ugandan children receiving DP-based PDMC following severe malarial anaemia.
3. To evaluate population-level changes in P. falciparum genetic diversity between enrolment and follow-up malaria recurrence among Ugandan children on DP-based PDMC.
4. To characterize malaria recurrence as recrudescence versus reinfection among Ugandan children receiving DP for PDMC following SMA.
5. To estimate the association between baseline P. falciparum genetic diversity and the risk of malaria recurrence among Ugandan children receiving DP for PDMC following SMA.
6. To evaluate population-level changes in P. falciparum antimalarial drug-resistance markers between enrolment and follow-up malaria recurrence among children on DP-based PDMC.
