INTERGENERATIONAL WEALTH TRANSFER AND PROMOTION OF ECONOMIC SECURITY IN UGANDA: A CASE OF GREATER KAMPALA METROPOLITAN AREA (GKMA).
REFNo: SS1837ES
The main objective of the study will be to explore the phenomenon of IWT in GKMA, how it promotes ES and develop a model that enables the preservation and eventual transfer of wealth. The study will attempt to unravel the seeming economic immobility in terms of wealth transfer and look at the challenges encountered by wealth creators/possessors in an effort to undertake wealth transfer. It will also propose ways through which wealth transfer efforts can be carried out effectively in order to promote ES.
(i) To examine what mechanisms for IWT exist in GKMA and how they operate.
(ii) To analyze how the intergenerational transfer of financial and physical capital can promote ES in GKMA.
(iii)To establish the challenges encountered by wealth creators/possessors in effecting IWT in GKMA and suggest mitigation measures.

Digital Agripreneurship Innovation to Enhance Post-Pandemic Resilience among Refugee Women and Youth in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda (Digital Agripreneur Study).
REFNo: A320ES
To assess the perceptions of refugee women and youth about the socioeconomic effects of COVID-19. Through focus group discussions (FGDs) with up to 40 key informants (24 women and youths, 16 refugee leaders (including village leaders and committee members, as well as refugee welfare leaders and committee members) who will be purposively selected based on gender, age and social economic status, to understand how COVID-19 affected women’s/youths’ socioeconomic status, as well as the barriers and motivators to their engagement in agripreneurship, and training needs.
To develop and implement an optimal Digital Agripreneurship innovation to enhance economic security among refugee women and youth. The Digital Agripreneur platform will be developed drawing from the data collected in Objective 1 above.
To determine the preliminary impact of the Digital Agripreneurhip innovation on the economic and food securities, agripreneurship knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. This will involve the use of technology adoption models to assessing the feasibility and acceptability. The impact on economic security will be explored using the “before-and-after” experiment. The novelty and the significance of our project is that we utilize an interdisciplinary innovation composed of face-to-face and digital learning, information support, mentors and microcredit to enhance post-pandemic resilience using participatory approaches. Our project could provide a more accessible, affordable, and innovative means of enhancing economic security, as well as digital literacy among vulnerable refugee women and youth

MECS East Africa Battery-eCooking Field Trial, Uganda
REFNo: SIR105ES
The aims of this study are to examine the technical performance in real-life use and user experience of battery-augmented electric cooking equipment. Specifically, we are aiming to answer the following questions: - How will this technology perform in a real life situation, with real cooks? What technical changes are needed in the future to make this product more attractive to everyday cooks? - How will cooks respond to using the technology? How do they adopt it over time? In addition, we will be studying the following: - Are the devices compatible with traditional cooking practices? Could they encourage households to move towards clean energy stack? How do everyday cooks use the devices? What are their preferences for features of the devices? How can we make the devices more desirable and sustainable? What are gender implications of using the device? - What is the commercial viability of e-cooking (socially, technically, financially viable)? - How do the batteries perform in a real life setting? How much wear does the battery undergo? What are potential impacts on the grid? When, how, and to what extent is the battery power used? - What are health impacts of using the device?

The demand for digital identification amongst small enterprise owners in Uganda
REFNo: SS1836ES
Understand how the provision of UGPass affects business owners, including their likelihood of writing contracts with suppliers and customers.,3.Look at whether uptake and usage of UGPass varies depending on whether: a) contracting is highlighted as a potential benefit of UGPass, or b) sign-up assistance is provided to the enterprise owner.,2. Assess whether willingness to pay for the UGPass digital ID varies depending on whether: a) contracting is highlighted as a potential benefit of UGPass, or b) sign-up assistance is provided to the enterprise owner.,1. Gather data on the willingness of micro, small and medium enterprise owners in Kampala to pay for the new UGPass digital ID.,Informality hinders firm profitability and growth in a variety of ways, including limiting firms to suppliers in their social networks due to issues of trust and fraud. Digital IDs offer potential paths to increasing formality, such as by allowing the verification of identities and the authentication of signed contracts, thus helping businesses to sign contracts with new suppliers with lower prices or a better selection of goods. However, there is no research to date examining the demand for a digital ID and verified authentication services among business owners. ,

That is: 3A) Identify the commonly used media and/or other epilepsy literacy delivery channels; 3B) Determine the effective ways to deliver information about epilepsy; 3C) Determine the level of accessibility to smartphones or computers, and the feasibility of using an APP or Computer Program to track seizures, and medication usage, and to deliver information about epilepsy.,Aim 2: To determine specific social groupings (e.g., school, family, community) that AWE believe most need education to impact epilepsy literacy. That is: 2A) Identify the patient’s perceived priority areas for epilepsy literacy; and 2B) Determine the patient-prioritized target social groupings for epilepsy health literacy.,Aim 1: To understand the experiences of adolescents with epilepsy (AWE) in relation to community stigma and discrimination and its impact. That is; 1A) Determine the patient history of epilepsy: the onset of seizures, and perceptions; 1B) Determine the immediate and long-term reactions/responses to epilepsy among patients, families, and community members; and 1C) Determine the nature and extent of familial, school, and community-based beliefs and misconceptions about epilepsy,The main objective of this study is to explore the relationship between epilepsy and stigma through the experiences of adolescents, who represent a pertinent target audience and are often agents of change in their communities.,
