Different Return for the Same Agricultural Hired Labor: Evidence from Uganda
REFNo: SS1732ES
Design and test an intervention aimed at (i) sensitizing male workers, and (ii) assisting female farmers in recruiting male labor based on the findings of the previous experiments. Try to isolate one mechanism behind the (expected) differential results of the willingness-to-pay exercise: transaction costs to find and hire casual workers. Investigate if male and female managers are equally willing to pay to hire male and female workers (demand-side barrier). Examine if male casual laborers demand a wage premium in order to work for female plot managers (supply-side barrier).

GENETIC, PHENOTYPIC AND PHYLOGEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF LIBERICA COFFEE
REFNo: A294ES
1) To understand the genetic diversity of Liberica coffee (across its natural range and in cultivation), and its correspondence to physical features (morphology), chemistry (data already available) and sensory characteristics (some data already available).
2) Elucidate patterns of genetic diversity across cultivated and wild C. liberica in Uganda.
3) Place cultivated Ugandan genotypes within a country-wide and African-wide perspective. In particular we will focus on the origin of farmed Liberica in Uganda: to ascertain whether they are from an indigenous source (i.e. one of the two forest locations in Uganda where this species has been recorded), or not. Farmers in Uganda say that this coffee travelled with previous generations from the forest. National and regional identity will be an asset for the marketing and development of Liberica-excelsa (kisansa coffee).
4) Propose a new, and much-needed, intraspecific classification for C. liberica.

Exploring the implications of blockchain and other emerging technologies on refugee governance
REFNo: SS1622ES
My research will examine how blockchain and other emerging technologies are conceptualized, deployed, and operationalized within refugee settings. Using Kenya and Uganda as sites of analysis, the thesis will ask the following research questions: 1) How are blockchain and other technologies shaping the governance of refugees? 2) How do refugees engage with blockchain and other emerging technologies in their everyday lives? 3) What is at stake in these technological systems and practices when applied within humanitarian interventions?
The specific objectives that follow from these research questions are to: a) assess what can be learned from the deployment of blockchain and other emerging technologies b) examine how refugees understand and frame their engagement with such technologies and c) understand the visions and imaginaries of tech developers and humanitarian organizations and how they define their collaborative work. This research also considers how different actors (tech industry workers, corporate funders, UNHCR staff and refugees) understand, contribute to, and shape the discourse around blockchain and other technologies in humanitarian settings. This research will use several data collection methods based on empirical fieldwork in camp and non-camp settings and discourse analysis to capture the diverse perspectives of tech industry workers, corporate funders, UNHCR innovation staff, camp staff and refugees.

White Sisters, Nursing Practices, and Reproductive Health in East Africa, 1890-present
REFNo: SS1371ES
This research project comprises two sub-projects carried out by a senior researcher (PI – Prof. Dr. Hilde Bras who holds the Aletta Jacobs Chair in Economic and Social History, with special attention to Global Demography and Health at the University of Groningen), and a PhD student (Ivana Zecevic, MA), both working at the Department of History of the University of Groningen, Chair Group of Economic and Social History (ESH).
The project aims to contribute to the debate taking place among economic and social historians, historical demographers and medical historians about the historical legacies of colonialism for contemporary global health, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa (Doyle, 2013; Walters, 2008). What was the effect of the colonial presence, and of female missionaries in particular, on (reproductive) health in Africa? To what extent did missionary health care lead to changes in fertility (number of children per woman), maternal mortality, venereal diseases, and infant and child mortality and morbidity? Research within this debate has focused mainly on colonial state medicine and on doctors (Iliffe, 1998) and hardly on the role of the mission (but cf. Doyle et al., 2020; Jennings, 2006), mission nurses, and nursing care. Moreover the present project focuses on missionary nursing practices in relation to extant indigenous midwifery and nursing practices and explicitly foregrounds the relationship between the two.The overarching research question is: What are the nursing practices (related to maternal and child care) of missionary nurses (MSOLA), indigenous nurses, and missionary doctors and how are they related to fertility, morality, child and maternal health in East Africa, 1890-present?

Freedom of Religion or Beliefs Leadership Network (FoRBLN): A case study of Tororo district in Uganda.
REFNo: SS1308ES
Overall goal
To explore a new synthesis of theoretical models derived from a combination of work in cognitive anthropology with modes theory, social psychology with identity fusion, leadership psychology with barrier crossing leadership.
The research aims to address the following research questions
1. What role do imagistic group experiences play in fostering identity fusion Vs group identification bonds directed at the ingroup vs outgroup.
2. How far attitudes towards and experiences of barrier crossing leadership lead to improved intergroup attitudes and behaviours.
3. Whether individual empathetic abilities moderate the effects of imagistic experiences and/ or barrier crossing leadership.
4. How far the evidence from the cross cultural sample supports the theoretical model outline by modes theory.

Omuyambi: Traditional healer support to improve HIV viral suppression in rural Uganda
REFNo: HS2780ES
Aim 2: Evaluate implementation of the Omuyambi intervention using a convergent, mixed methods study design guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Participants for this Aim will include TH and PLWH from Aim 1, in addition to staff from affiliated HIV clinics, and Ministry of Health (MoH) AIDS Control Division Officers who will be invited to participate in in- depth interviews and structured surveys. Following the convergent mixed methods approach38, quantitative and qualitative data – including validated survey instruments, in-depth interviews, and structured observations – will be collected to evaluate context pertinent to Omuyambi implementation over a 24-month period.,Aim 1: We will compare the Omuyambi intervention versus HIV clinic-based care (control) in a cluster randomized trial to assess the effectiveness of a community-based traditional healer (TH)-facilitated support program for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Mbarara District. We will conduct a CRT of Omuyambi versus TH’s referrals for clinic-based HIV care at 40 TH cluster sites over 33 months in Aim 1. The unit of randomization is the TH; each cluster includes TH and adult PLWH who are ART naïve or defaulted from HIV care. TH who are randomized to Omuyambi will facilitate HIV support for ART naïve or nonadherent PWLH receiving care at their practice.,We propose a parallel arm cluster randomized trial to compare the intervention (Omuyambi) to the control in Aim 1 to assess the effectiveness of the intervention and use a mixed methods approach to evaluate the implementation in Aim 2.,
