Flexibility in primate vocal behaviour: the role of socio-ecological pressures and context in the production and percep-tion of vocal signals.

The general aim of the proposed study is to contribute to the debate about how fluctuations in socio-ecological pressures may lead to more or less flexible behavioural strategies in primate social and vocal behaviour, and what role individual states may additionally contribute to this. This is done by studying the behavioural consequences of (1.) fluctuations in predation pressures and (2.) fluctuations in female reproductive states in two different primate species of the Budongo Forest Reserve: (1.) guereza colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) and (2.) chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). For the study on the colobus monkeys, behavioural monitoring, as well as playback experiments, will be conducted to find out whether guereza colobus monkeys flexibly adjust their vocal and social behaviour relative to local differences in predation pressures. For the study on the chimpanzees, only behavioural observation will be conducted, aimed to assess whether female chimpanzees flexibly adjust their vocal and social behaviour relative to reproductive state and food availability. These studies test hypotheses arising from substantial previous work with the Sonso and Kaniyo Pabidi communities of Guereza colobus monkeys and chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest, Uganda, which in the past also entailed observational and acoustical experimental fieldwork.

General objective This study aims to answer the question of which factors are most preferable among at-risk populations and therefore affect their decisions to take up a preventative HIV vaccine in comparison to other preventative methods through the implementation of a discrete choice experiment (DCE) in Uganda. Specific objectives The objectives of this study will be to conduct key informant interviews which will ultimately inform a DCE which will conducted to determine factors influencing the prospective uptake of a preventative HIV vaccine among People at Substantial Risk for HIV Infection (PSRHI) in Uganda.  A survey of the mammals of the Ajai Wildlife Reserve before, during and after large mammal reintroductions.

The small mammals of Uganda have been fairly well studied in some regions of the country, but northern regions lack modern survey data documenting species occurrences. The Ajai Wildlife Reserve is located close to a very important historical ‘type’ location, Rhino Camp, where many original species descriptions were made. Most of these specimens, however, are very old, lack associated molecular tissues, and confound taxonomic advancements in many groups (particularly rodents and shrews). Additionally, per conversations with collaborators and rangers, we have come to learn that large mammal reintroductions are planned for Ajai. Conducting surveys before and after any reintroductions will allow us to evaluate changes through time associated with reintroducing extirpated species to this reserve.

The objective of this study is to determine the feasibility and acceptability of an aerobic intervention via a treadmill among individuals with HIV and depression in Uganda.

 The Spiritual Life of Water: Aquatic Sacred Space and Urban Environmental Change in 20th century Johannesburg and Kampala

My dissertation research explores how water-based religious practices have been profoundly transformed amidst the immense environmental and legal changes precipitated during the colonial and postcolonial periods in Africa. I examine both the creativity and the resilience of African religious practitioners in making new meaning amidst the displacement of water-based loci of spirituality. In particular, I focus on the paradox of ritual cleansing and healing in polluted bodies of water, a practice that has its roots in the systems of colonization and racial exclusion that are foundational to histories of urban Africa. Kampala’s Lubigi Wetland has long been a vibrant space where diverse groups of Ugandans sought and still seek healing, both physical (particularly at the advent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic) and spiritual. Their resources are a powerful spirit medium thought to connect to spiritual forces in the wetland’s tranquil waters. Yet today, human settlement, environmental degradation, and violent conflict overshadow the swamp’s long history as a spiritual healing center of the Buganda Kingdom.

At this stage of my research, I would like to focus on three non-exclusive lines of enquiry: the debate surrounding the first identity cards during late colonialism; the documentation of non-indigenous people, and in particular the citizenship crisis of Asians in the 1960s and 1970s; and finally, the intense periods of identification during electoral periods, and more specifically the processes of voter registration.
