The Influence of Air Pollution on Lung Health among People Living with HIV
REFNo: HS2658ES

To identify potentially targetable mechanisms by which air pollution exposure may influence lung inflammation in people with and without HIV. I will collect bronchoalveolar lavage specimens in 45 PLWH and 45 HIV-uninfected participants and use Multiplex assays to compare inflammatory profiles associated with higher as compared to lower air pollution exposure levels. Hypothesis: HIV infection and air pollution synergistically induce a pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in the lungs of PLWH. ,

“Thriving Together” - Northern Ugandan Women Project
REFNo: SS1930ES

Purpose
The main purpose of the study is to quantitatively investigate the reintegration experiences of women who were abducted not for the purpose of war fighting, but primarily to be married to combatants, or to be used as servants when too young to be married, and examined the impact of war-driven abduction on human capital development, attitudes, and psychological well-being.

Research Questions
The following four primary research questions will be pursued/answered during the study:
1. What are the long-term effects (15-20 years after the abduction experience) of severe trauma on women’s psychological well-being, cognitive functions, social preferences and other individual attitudes and preferences, such as competitiveness, grit and social shyness, which are likely to affect their participation in economic and social activities?
2. Is there evidence of intergenerational transmission of trauma from the abducted mothers to their children’s psychological well-being?
3. Could a novel program centered around the creation of women support groups and the shared formulation and attainment of short-term goals, benefit women – and in particularly formerly abducted women – by improving psychological well-being, positively affecting preferences and aspirations, and/or encouraging the pursuit of economic opportunities?
4. Could mental health intervention in the form of either group therapy or individual therapy improve women psychological well-being?
