 The multi-levelled politics of national refugee policies: A case study of Uganda MUST-2024-1373

Given the problem statement the specific aim of this research is to create a multi-level framework to study power relations in refugee policy in countries of first asylum by using Uganda as a case study (specific). I consider conducting such a study meaningful in two ways (meaningful): 1) Scientifically, it will advance literature on International Relations and Refugee studies by adding a perspective from the Global South and directly linking policies that are shaped on a (inter)national level – and that are the outcome of political debate – to their implementation on the ground. 2) Looking into this topic is societally meaningful as it looks at the effect of policies on the lives of refugees and problems that can be found in the current system. In order to fulfil these objectives, I will conduct interviews with actors that make/influence/implement policies and refugees, the actors that are ‘receivers/co-creators’ of these policies. To conduct the interviews I will travel Kampala and refugee settlements Nakivale and Adjumani. It will also help me to travel to New York, Geneva, and Brussels to conduct interviews with policy makers at (mainly UN) institutions (action-oriented). I will be able to do this since I can use my personal travel fee (provided by the Research Foundation Flanders on an annual basis) for travel but also for payment of renumeration of participants and research assistants. If that amount is not sufficient, I can apply for a travel grant with the same organisation. To ensure that I have the right skills to conduct these interviews, I have followed trainings (realistic). ,

 Building resilience to climate change in Lake Victoria’s fisheries: the role of women’s fisheries organizations in Uganda.

The broad goal of this project is to understand factors that have led to successful adaptation outcomes for women involved with Womens Fisheries Organizations (WFOs), and to document WFOs’ potential to facilitate long term climate resilience in Uganda’s fisheries. Objective 1 (O1) is to establish indicators of success from the perspective of the women involved in WFOs. Objective 2 (O2) is to document actual livelihood and adaptive outcomes of being involved in WFOs (based on indicators from O1). Objective 3 (O3) is to document (a) qualitative factors relating to social dynamics, governance structure, and power relations and (b) quantitative spatial, infrastructural, ecological, and demographic measures that have contributed to WFO success.
